Despite a 10-strikeout performance from pitcher Jenny Koschanow and a three-for-three showing at the plate from Katie Mattice, the Mohawk Mountaineers women’s fastball team dropped its season opener 5-4 to Conestoga Condors.
Kicking off the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association schedule on Tuesday (Sept. 11) in Kitchener, the Mountaineers, came back from a 2-1 deficit to lead 4-3 in the sixth inning. But a pair of runs in the bottom of the seven, and final inning, gave the Condors the win.
Koschanow, who pitched the entire game, allowed 10 hits. Three of those hits came off the bat of Melissa Voisin, who had a homerun and knocked in a pair of scores. Koschanow did not walk a batter.
In addition to her trio of hits, Mattice had one run-batted-in and scored one herself. Samantha Tubman contributed two hits for the Mountaineers who collected a total of nine hits off Laura Matheson. Jill Larlee was one-for-three for Mohawk, with an RBI and a run scored.
The Mountaineers will see their first home action with a pair of games this weekend against the Cambrian Golden Shield of Sudbury. The teams meet Friday (Sep. 14) at 5:30, then again Saturday at 10:00 am. Both games will be at Mohawk Sports Park.
