The defending Ontario Colleges Athletic Association rugby champion Mohawk Mountaineers made it two straight victories to start the season, taming the George Brown Huskies 54-10 in Toronto on Saturday (Sept. 15).
Last year’s league scoring pacesetter, James Cumpson, had a try, four converts and two penalties for 19 points to lead the Mohawk attack. Steve Johnston and Ryan Nevitt each scored two tries for the Mountaineers. Also going over were Adam Davidson, Josh Jones and Cameron Watson.
Head coach Alex Paris was pleased with the effort from his charges. “The boys came alive in the second half. (We had) lots of great backs’ play and the forwards worked hard to retain the ball.”
The Mountaineers have 10 points after two games (four points for each victory and a bonus point in each contest for their scoring). Their next action is Wednesday (Sept. 19) at 4:30 when the Georgian Grizzlies of Barrie visit Mohawk Sports Park.
