Grizzlies give Mohawk scare but Mountaineers come out on top

The defending champion Mohawk Mountaineers made it three straight Ontario Colleges Athletic Association rugby wins as they defeated the Georgian Grizzlies 33 – 13.

After Mohawk raced to a 14-0 lead early in the first half, the Grizzlies stormed back with 13 unanswered points to cut the margin to 14 – 13 at the half. Mohawk was very fortunate their defense stiffened as the half ended with Georgian knocking at the door repeatedly in the last few minutes.

Mountaineers’ head coach Alex Paris said his side made some costly errors and Georgian put lots of pressure on the home side. But it was a different Mohawk team in the second half. A quick try by Mountaineers’ Ryan Nevitt and James Cumpson’s convert seemed to stall the Grizzlies’ momentum and two more tries and a convert in the half rounded out the scoring.

Georgian showed excellent resolve in their first league game and will be a tough test for the rest of the league down the stretch. Mohawk, despite its 3-0 league record, will need to show they can play for the full 80 minutes as the schedule gets tougher the rest of the way.

Josh Jones led the winning team with two tries, with singles by Nevitt, Jeff Perssia and Chadd Elliot. Cumpson had four converts to complete the Mohawk scoring.

The Mountaineers next game will be Wednesday (Sept. 26) when they visit Lindsay’s Fleming College.
