Jonathan Ferland’s two goals and two assists paced Hamilton to a 7-6 overtime win over the Rochester Americans in the Bulldogs final American Hockley League pre-season game. With Saturday’s win in Hagersville, the ‘Dogs finished their three-game exhibition series with a 1-2-0-0 record.
The Amerks jumped to an early lead scoring the game’s first four goals in the first period. Kenndal McArdle opened the scoring at the 1:05 mark. Pierre-Luc Faubert then added two goals at 1:58 and 7:27 to give Rochester a 3-0 lead. Rounding out Rochester’s opening frame outburst was Mike Duco at 12.29. Ferland broke the goose egg three minutes later, with Eric Manlow and Greg Stewart assisting.
Cedrick Desjardins replaced Yann Danis between the pipes for Hamilton at the start of the second period.
Bulldogs’ forward David Desharnais one-timed a pass from Duncan Milroy past Americans netminder David Shantz for his first goal of the pre-season just 2:49 into the middle stanza. Stewart earned his second assist of the night.
The teams twice exchanged goals before the period ended. Adam Taylor (4:33) and Dan Collins (16:14) on the power play gave Rochester a 6-2 margin before Milroy (11:21, shorthanded) and Janne Lahti (17:34, power play) narrowed the count to 6-4 to start the third period. Hamilton cut the lead to one goal at 19:16 when Lahti banged in his second goal of the night off of a rebound. Mathieu Aubin and Ferland recorded the assists on the play.
With just seven seconds remaining in the game, Hamilton forced overtime with Ferland’s second goal of the game. Lahti and David Cornacchia assisted. The Bulldogs completed the comeback at 3:38 of the extra frame when Gerard Miller finished off a three-way passing play from Milroy and Sergei Kostitsyn for Hamilton’s win. Miler’s goal was his first of the pre-season.
The Bulldogs will open their regular season schedule on Sunday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Rochester to take on the Americans.
