Mountaineers challenging for second in OCAA women’s soccer

The Mohawk women’s soccer team downed Conestoga 2-1 in Kitchener Wednesday (Oct. 3) and solidified it’s hold on second place in the West Region. The Mountaineers are now 3-1 for nine points, one back of second place Fanshawe. The Falcons drew 0-0 with Sheridan.

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association game was scoreless at half time, even though Mohawk had a goal denied on a disputed offside call.

The home town Condors then took a 1-0 lead in the second half and it appeared they might hang on. B with about 10 minutes remaining, Ali Bettger made a good run up the wing and passed to Kelsey Forbes, whose shot hit the post and Jessica Lee fired home the equalizer on the rebound to tie the score.

Then with three minutes to go and Mohawk pushing hard, Andrea Bonitatibus managed to knock in the winner.

The Mountaineers’ next game will be Saturday (Oct. 13) on the the 40th Anniversary Homecoming Weekend. The Sarnia Lambton Lions will provide the opposition for the 1 p.m. game at Hillfield Strathallan.
