Mohawk moved into third place in the West Region of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s soccer, with a 1-0 win over the Niagara Knights at Mohawk Sports Park on Thursday (Oct. 4).
After a scoreless first half, James Bond got loose on the right wing and slotted home the game’s only goal from about 15 yards early in the second half. It was Bond’s second game winning goal of the season. Freshman Branden Agro recorded his third shutout.
Mohawk head coach Richard Bennett said his team could have done better in the last five minutes of the game but overall he felt they put in a much better effort and hopes the squad can build from this point. The Mountaineers, now 3-2, entered the game tied with Niagara for fourth place, but with the victory moved ahead of Fanshawe and into third. Mohawk has nine points, three behind Sheridan. Humber leads the region with 13 points.
Mohawk’s next game will be Friday, Oct. 12 when St. Clair visits Mohawk Sports Park for a 4:30 kickoff. It will be a busy weekend because the next day (Oct. 13) The Mountaineers meet Lambton as part of Mohawk’s 40th Anniversary Homecoming Weekend.
