Mountaineer’s men’s vollyballers spike Humber tourney

Chalk up another fine performance by Mohawk’s men’s volleyball team, as it captured the Humber Cup Invitational Tournament in Etobicoke on Saturday (Nov. 3).

The Mountaineers finished preliminary play with a sparkling 9-1 record. The only set they lost was in the final preliminary match, as they split their games with Algonquin of Ottawa.

In semi final play, the Mountaineers swept Nipissing of North bay 25-17, 25-23. They then won the title, rallying for a 2-1 verdict against Fanshawe in the gold medal contest. The scores were 21-25, 25-11, 15-12.

Mohawk had a perfect 3-0 match record to start preliminary play on Friday. The Mountaineers opened with a 2-0 win over Durham. The scores were 25-21, 25-18. Mohawk then swept Seneca 25-20, 25-7 and finished off with a 25-14, 25-17 decision over Loyalist.

Jasmin Cull of Mohawk was the tournament MVP and team mate Steve Pawelczyk was selected to the All-Star Team.

On the women’s side, Mohawk went 8-2 in the prelims, but then bowed in straight games, 20-25, 24-26 to host Humber in the semis. The Hawks went on to defeat Nipissing 2-1 for the championship.

The women team had only one blemish on their opening day record as they drew 1-1 with Durham in their opening match. Mohawk took the first game 27-25, but the Lords bounced back 25-17. They finished the day by downing Seneca 25-11, 25-14 and Loyalist 25-18, 25-15.

Mohawk’s Leah Waxman was named to the All-Star Team.
