Lions can’t spoil women Mountaineers OCAA volleyball season opener

It was a good start to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season for the Mohawk women’s volleyball team on Thursday (Nov. 8).

The Mountaineers needed just less than one hour to defeat the visiting Sarnia Lambton Lions, 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-12) at the Fennell Gym. The Lions were playing their sixth match of the season and saw their record fall to 2-4.

Second year left side Rachel VanHertingsvelet from Durham Christian High School in Bowmanville led Mohawk with 13 points, including nine kills, one stuff block and three service aces. Stacy Dafoe, the fourth-year product out of Paris District High, had seven kills and three aces from her power position, while second-year middle Candice Kragten from Cayuga Secondary had three kills, one block and five aces.

Mohawk coach Brian McEnhill was pleased with his team’s first regular season match, even though they have been playing in tournaments.

“That’s one of the tougher games to play, said McEnhill, “obviously a little bit slower pace than we’re used to. The girls were a little sluggish, but I got everyone in, so it’s always a nice thing when you can do that.”

The coach had special praise for Kragten, whom he said has been working extremely hard and it’s paying off.
