A sweep in one match, and a nail biter in the other. But the end result was victory by both Mohawk Mountaineers Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball teams over the previously undefeated Fanshawe Falcons in London on Wednesday night (Nov. 14).
The women’s team got the ball rolling with a 3-0 victory. The scores were 25-23, 26-24, 25-21. Right side player Leah Waxman had 12 points of total offence to lead the Mountaineers. Janette Jakubiec and fellow middle player Sarah Borycki each had 11 points and libero Adrienne Kolich contributed 15 digs.
What most pleased Mohawk coach Brian McEnhill was the team’s focus. “We played fairly consistent for the entire match, said McEnhill. “It’s something we’ve been struggling with.” With the victory, Mohawk improved to 2-0 and a tie for first place with Nipissing in the Central West Region. The loss by Fanshawe was its first after a terrific start in the West Region. The Falcons are now 5-1.
The late game featured the men and it was a long drawn out affair between the OCAA’s top ranked team from Mohawk and the number two rated squad from Fanshawe. And the Mountaineers, playing their first regular season match, prevailed in the end, 3-2 over the Falcons, now 3-1. Mohawk rallied twice for a 19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-12 and 15-9 triumph.
