Hamilton’s Hayley Roberts is pushing herself to represent Canada at international speed skating competitions.
The 18-year-old was selected to compete in the recent Junior Canadian Speed Skating Championships, which were used to decide this country’s team at the world juniors in Bolzano, Italy from Jan. 11-13. At the Canadian event, which attracted Canada’s top 32 skaters, Roberts was a member of Team Ontario.
The Hamilton Mountain resident was 14th in the 1500-metre event and was 24th in the 500m and 1000m competitions. Overall she finished 23rd.
Roberts, who trains at the Cambridge Speed Skating Club and assists coaching at the Dofasco Hamilton Speed Skating Club, is currently ranked first in Intermediate Women in Ontario. She is currently competing in the Quebec Elite Series for Canada’s top speed skaters. After two elite meets she is 19th overall in Juniors and Seniors.
In the New Year, Roberts is planning on moving to Montreal to train full time with a goal of making the Canadian National Development Team (the top 16 skaters in Canada) and represent Canada internationally. The graduate of Westmount Secondary school intends to to study Science at either McGill University or Concordia University in Montreal in 2008.
