They are adversaries during the regular season and playoffs, but on Jan. 14, players from across the Golden Horseshoe League were side by side as teammates during the annual all-star game.
Held in Port Colborne, the game featured some of the best players in the GHL, including five members of the Stoney Creek Warriors.
Mike Kavanagh, Greg Bryl, Jordan Gignac, Cayle Creen and Mike Gibson all suited up for Team Blue, which included players from Niagara Falls, Fort Erie, Wheatfield and Stoney Creek. They faced off in an exciting showcase of skill against Team Yellow, featuring players from St. Catharines, Thorold, Port Colborne and Welland.
While the final score was 8-5 for Team Yellow, the Warriors made their presence known as Kavanagh and Bryl each scored in the losing cause. Former Warrior and Stoney Creek native Shane Davidson, who now plays for Thorold, scored a goal for Team Yellow.
Bryl, who scored a highlight reel wrap around from his knees in the first period, said he really enjoyed the all-star experience.
“It was a great chance to play with some old buddies from minor hockey,” said Bryl, referring to Jason Aucoin and Shane Davidson for the Thorold Blackhawks, as well as teammate Kavanagh. “It was nice to see we’ve all made it to this level.”
Overall, Bryl felt the Warriors were well represented at the all-star game. “We had our chances to get a few more goals, but I thought we represented our community and our team really well.”
