Cathedral honours football greats

If you’re an alumni of Cathedral, or were a supporter of the high school’s athletics programs, then mark Feb. 1 on your calendar.

The Cathedral Football Alumni is presenting the first Annual Alumni Hall of Fame Inductions and Pub Night on that night at the former building at 380 Main Street East that was the school for Cathedrals male students.

Tickets for the event, which will include a buffet, are $20. It is anticipated that at least 600 football alumni will attend. Hall of Fame Alumni inductees include Rocco Romano, 2007 CFL Football Hall Inductee; Tom Gallagher, who dedicated his life to Cathedral and remains the all-time winningest coach; John McPhee, former principal and Cathedral coaching icon; and Peter Giftopoulos, a fan favourite and Penn State linebacker and former Hamilton Tiger Cat.

Cathedral’s football alumni are committed to the growth of high school football and dedication to players past and present. Pub Night will raise money for Cathedral’s rejuvenated football program by going towards new equipment, transportation, and training. In addition, it will bring a longstanding community together all for the love of a school and football. Cathedral’s new head coach Paul Barrett and his team of coaches, teachers and volunteers plan to deliver a fun night and a walk down memory lane.

Organizers say the event is designed to emphasize the importance of giving back to the community, recognizing some of the legends from Cathedral football, and bringing the generation gap together to endlessly create new opportunities for players in academics and athletics.
