Locke lives up to all-star billing for Bulldogs

Corey Locke celebrated his selection to the American Hockey League’s Team Canada for its all-star game with a goal and two assists to lead the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 5-2 win over the Rampage on Friday night in San Antonio.

Locke opened the scoring for the Bulldogs with his 15th goal of the season midway through the first period. At 7:44 of the second frame San Antonio replied when Enver Lisin potted his 13th marker of the campaign. The teams then exchanged goals with Greg Stewart scoring for Hamilton on the power-play at 9:51 and David Spina tying the game at 2-2 for the Rampage at 16:45.

Hamilton scored two goals in the third frame to take a 4-2 lead. Eric Manlow netted the eventual game-winning goal just 1:37 into the stanza followed by Kyle Chipchura at 6:19. Matt D’Agostini iced the win with his 12th tally and fifth goal in as many games at 11:18 of the final period.

Between the pipes, Yann Danis turned aside 30 of 32 shots in the win for Hamilton while his counterpart Josh Tordjman made 23 saves on 27 shots.

The Bulldogs dominated special teams play, going 2-for-5 on the power play and a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.

D’Agostini, with a goal and an assist, and Locke, with a goal and two helpers, extended their point streaks to nine and seven games respectively.

Locke, who is already the Bulldogs’ all-time leading scorer with 192 points (70-122-192), is also close to setting the franchise mark in goals and assists. Locke now needs only two goals to overtake Brian Swanson and Tomas Plekanec (71 goals) and two assists to surpass Peter Sarno (123 assists).

The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday (Jan. 20) when they travel to Houston to play the Aeros. Hamilton’s next home game is on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. against the Lake Erie Monsters at Copps Coliseum.
