Mohawk’s volleyball teams continued their unbeaten Ontario Colleges Athletic Association winning ways at the expense of the Canadore Panthers on Friday (Jan. 25). The Mountaineers took 3-0 decisions in each match against the North Bay opponents at the Fennell Gym.
The women needed only 48 minutes for their 25-6, 25-16, 25-15 verdict. Mohawk’s starters played the first set, then bench players Bridgit Caravaggio, Candice Kragten, Ashley Brunkard and Kristen Lawson came in for the final two games.
Leah Waxman led the Mountaineers with 15 kills and one service ace. Janette Jakubiec played only one set but managed two kills, four stuff blocks and three aces. With the victory Mohawk is now 9-0.
The men improved to 8-0 with a straight sets, 25-7, 25-13, 27-25 decision. Jasmin Cull had six kills and seven aces. Kevin Watson had six kills and six aces, Adam Schiedel produced seven kills and four aces and Ian Cameron collected five kills, one block and two aces.
All told, the Mountaineer men had 25 aces, which obliterated the OCAA record of 20 in one match, set by Mohawk against Niagara in the 2005-06 season.
The Mountaineers are back into action Saturday afternoon against the other North Bay team, the Nipissing University Lakers. The Nipissing women take a 7-3 record into their noon meeting with Mohawk at the Fennell Gym. That will be followed by men’s action at 2 p.m., when the Mountaineers entertain the 5-3 Lakers.
