The Mohawk men’s basketball team downed the Redeemer Royals 90-50 in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association action at the Fennell Gym on Tuesday (Jan. 29).
Mohawk led 44-26 at the half. Tyrone Berry and Mike Barr led the Mountaineers with 15 points apiece in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association game. Mackenzie Milmine had 14 and Marko Gacic 13. Justin Corvers led Redeemer with 14 points.
Mohawk coach Brian Jonker got a chance to get his bench some extended minutes on the floor. “I thought in the second half our second unit, in particular, played with a lot of energy. They played great. Defensively they were very strong,” added Jonker.
With the victory, the Mountaineers improved their record to 7-5 while the Royals fell to 1-13. It was an important win for the Mountaineers. They moved into a tie for fifth place in the West Region with Algoma and have a game in hand on the Thunderbirds. They are also four points back of Fanshawe and Niagara, who share third place and Mohawk has a game in hand on both the Falcons and Knights.
The Mountaineers get back into action Friday (Feb. 1) when they head to Windsor to face the St. Clair Saints. Coach Jonker said it’ll be a game they have to win if they are going to challenge for a home playoff game.
