Thunderbirds fly away from Mohawk with two OCAA cage wins

The Mohawk Mountaineers were beaten by the Algoma Thunderbirds in an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association basketball doubleheader at the Fennell Gym on Friday night (Feb 8).

Algoma won the women’s game, 55-50, while the Thunderbirds captured the men’s contest, 85-77.

In the men’s game, despite 25 points from Jerome Smith and 18 from Ricky Heath, the Mountaineers missed a chance to move into a three-way tie for fourth place with Niagara and Algoma. Instead, Mohawk, 8-7, remains two points back of Niagara and fell four behind Algoma and Fanshawe, who share third place in the West Region.

The Mountaineers have three games left including one with Sault College Cougars Saturday (Feb. 9) at 3 p.m. at the Fennell Gym.

In the women’s game, Melissa Zwolak had 15 points and Lisamarie Iavarone added 13 in a losing cause as the Mountaineers saw their record slip to 2-10.

The next action for the women will be Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. when Humber visits the Fennell Gym.
