Mountaineers take both ends of OCAA basketball twinbill

Mohawk’s men’s basketball team moved into a tie for fourth place with Niagara and Algoma in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Region, stunning the first-place Humber Hawks, 80-78, at the Fennell Gym.

Tuesday night’s game went well past midnight after a late tip-off due to the latest snowstorm to hit the area. Mohawk, which improved its record to 10-7, took one of two games from Humber (14-2) in the regular season.

The Mountaineers have one regular season game left, an important showdown at Niagara on Feb. 20 as Mohawk bids to get its best possible playoff position.

Not only were the men victorious, but Mohawk’s women’s team celebrated, downing Humber 68-63 to take both ends of the cage doubleheader. It was the women’s squad’s third win in 13 games. The Hawks fell to 5-8.

The Mountaineers finish their season Feb. 20 at Niagara.
