Mohawk readies for sudden-death playoff in men’s OCAA basketball

The Mohawk men’s basketball team completed it’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Region regular season with an 87-71 win at Niagara on Wednesday (Feb. 20).

The Mountaineers led the Knights 50-45 at half time. Six players scored in double figures. Tyrone Berry led Mohawk with 18 points. Mackenzie Milmine had 14, Ricky Heath 12, Alen Beader 11 and Marko Gacic and Matt Bruyn scored 10 each.

The Mountaineers finished the regular season with an 11-7 record and will have a cross-over sudden death playoff game with Algonquin, in Ottawa Saturday (Feb. 23) at 8 p.m. The Thunder finished with a 13-7 record in the East Region and Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker feels it’ll be a good matchup.

“We’ve got to play very well if we’re going to come home to play.” Mohawk is the host for the OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Feb. 28-March 1, and has to win Saturday if it is going to play in the event.

The Mohawk women have wound up their play for the 2007-08 season. The Mountaineers finished 3-11, losing their final game 59-46 at Niagara and will miss the post season.
