National, provincial honours for Mohawk’s volleyball players, coach


Leah Waxman and Jasmin Cull of Mohawk College each swept major awards in college volleyball.


Leah Waxman, of Port Dover Composite School, had 189 points from 159 kills, 19 aces and 11 blocks.

Right side player Waxman and Cull, the left side power hitter, were both named Canadian Colleges Athletic Association All-Canadians, Players of the Year in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association as well as OCAA First Team All-Stars.

The announcements were made Thursday (Feb. 21) during the awards breakfast at the OCAA Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Championships in London.


Jasmin Cull, a graduate of Ancaster High School, set an OCAA record 65 aces during the season.

Cull amassed 230 offensive points from 148 kills, an OCAA record 65 aces and 17 stuff blocks. The Ancaster High School graduate is joined on the men’s First All-Star Team by setter Peter Sniuolis and libero Sean Lowe.

Waxman, a product of Port Dover Composite School, had an outstanding season with 189 points from 159 kills, 19 aces and 11 blocks. She also contributed 117 digs.

Mountaineer middle Janette Jakubiec was named to the women’s Second All-Star Team and Mohawk’s Brian McEnhill was chosen the Central West Region Coach of the Year after guiding his women’s squad to a 12-2 record.
