The No. 2 ranked McMaster Marauders took a perfect 20-0 Ontario University Athletics conference season record and swept through the OUA playoffs to win the 2007/2008 provincial championship (the Forsyth Memorial Trophy) in straight sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21, over the Queen’s Golden Gaels.
In front of one of the largest, and most boisterous home crowds in McMaster volleyball history, the Marauders took Game 2 of a best-of-three series, after defeating Queen’s in Game 1, 26-24, 25-21, 25-17. McMaster becomes the first team since the best-of-three format came into effect in 1999 to sweep the OUA championship series.
This was McMaster’s second OUA men’s volleyball title since 1965-66, with their first victory coming in 1991-92.
McMaster was led by OUA first team all-star Jeremy Groenveld (Welland) who tallied a team leading 12 kills, six digs and two service aces scoring 16 points. OUA Most Valuable Player, Nathan Groenveld (Welland) added eight points for the Marauders.
Sean Panchal (Mississauga) captained the McMaster attack with 31 assists on the evening.
Queen’s was led by OUA first team all-star, Jeff Demeza (Calgary) who tallied 12 points,on 12 kills for the tri-colour
Devon Miller (Barrie), a fifth year senior, playing in his last career game finished with 35 assists for the Golden Gaels.
McMaster advances to the 2008 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men’s championship in Quebec City on Feb. 29- March 2.
