Gold for Mohawk’s men, bronze for women in OCAA volleyball

The Mohawk men captured the gold medal and the Mountaineer women grabbed the bronze at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Volleyball Championships at Fanshawe College in London on Saturday (Feb. 23).

The men scored an impressive three-game sweep of defending champion Algonquin Thunder of Ottawa, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.
All Canadian Jasmin Cull had a monster match for the Mountaineers with 30 offensive points, including 28 kills, one stuff block and one service ace. The next best total for Mohawk was Adam Schiedel with nine points from eight kills and one block.

Cull was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Schiedel was joined by team mates Peter Sniuolis and Kevin Watson as All-Stars.

Humber won the bronze medal with a 3-1 triumph over host Fanshawe.

With the victory, the Mountaineers advance to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Championship at Humber College on March 7-9.

Meanwhile, the Mohawk women went home with their third straight OCAA bronze medal, with a 3-1 verdict over Fanshawe. The scores were 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20.
Two Mountaineers had 12 points. Rachel VanHartingsveldt had ten kills and two blocks, while Sarah Borycki came up with eight kills, two blocks and two aces. Leah Waxman chipped in with 11 points and Janette Jakubiec added 10.

Humber beat Nipissing 3-0 for the gold medal and it marked the third consecutive year that Central West Region teams took all three women’s medals.
