Hamilton resident Hayley Roberts won the Ontario Provincial Short Track Speed Skating Championships this past weekend in the Open Women’s division. The Ontario Speed Skating Association (OSSA) event was hosted by the Clarington Speed Skating Club in Courtice.
18 year old Roberts was named to Team Ontario; however, she has declined to go to the North American and Canadian championship. Instead, Roberts will compete in Great Britain in the British Championships to be held March 28-30 in Dundee, Scotland.
Although Roberts competes for the Cambridge Speed Skating Club, she is an assistant coach at the Dofasco Hamilton Speed Skating Club. The Dofasco club qualified its first skater to the 2008 Provincial Championships. Laura Harley placed 12th overall in the Bantam girls division in her first Provincial Championships.
The Dofasco Hamilton Speed Skating club will be holding an open house on March 9th and all ages are asked to come and try speed skating (bring your helmet and neck guard) and meet the athletes and head coach Mike Murray, who is also a former National team member. The open house takes place at the F. H. Sherman Recreation and Learning Centre from noon to 1:15 pm.
