Mac set to recognize major athletic award winners


McMaster Athletics and Recreation has announced the finalists for the 84th Annual Athletic Awards Ceremony.

The finalists for the Ivor Wynne Male Athlete of the Year are: Adam Archibald, football (Kingston; Sheldon Francis, wrestling (Hamilton); Nathan Groenveld, volleyball (Welland); Matt Jacobs, golf (Ancaster); Michael May, baseball (Whitby); and Dave Rennalls, wrestling (Mississauga).

The finalists for the Female Athlete of the Year are: Sam Batten, soccer (Stouffville, ON); Carly Cermak, swimming (Cambridge); Lindsay DeGroot, basketball (Thedford, ON); Nora Griffiths, rowing (Burlington); Jenn Holt, volleyball (Hamilton); and Jessica Pearo, cross country (Richmond Hill).

The finalists for the Dr. Ray Johnson Award, for the male graduating student-athlete that radiates the “spirit of McMaster” are: Archibald; Albert Chang, rugby (Kitchener); and Parrish Offer, volleyball (Kingston).

The finalists for the Dr. Edna Guest Award, for the female graduating student-athlete that radiates the “spirit of McMaster” are: Leah Henderson – soccer (Forest, ON), Deanna Hollinger – basketball (Waterloo, ON), Laura Shoots – soccer (Brantford, ON)

The finalists for the Mel and Marilyn Hawkrigg Outstanding Sportsmanship award for male student-athletes are: Devin Brown, football (Barrie); Offer; and Alexander “Simba” Sithole – rugby (Toronto, ON).

The finalists for the Mel and Marilyn Hawkrigg Outstanding Sportsmanship award for female student-athletes are: Andrea Dunn, soccer (London); Rachel Hart, basketball (Ancaster); and Carly Welch, volleyball (Hamilton).

The finalists for the Les Prince award for leadership in community service are: Stephanie Carty, swimming (Caledonia); Laura Pilutti, lacrosse (Mississauga); and Carly Moore, soccer (Sarnia).

The finalists for the Bruce Cochrane Award for service provided to varsity athletic teams are: Stefan Kegel, swimming; and Dan Russell, men’s volleyball (Hamilton)

The Joyce Wignall Award for community outreach demonstrated by a team will be announced at the ceremony. The awards ceremonies, set for Thursday (March 27) at 4 p.m. in the Burridge Gymnasium, will be broadcast on the internet at http://www.athrec.mcmaster.ca/athletics/live-video.html
