Oakville’s Zach Chetrat has been named to Swimming Canada’s team for the 2nd FINA World Youth Championships. The 24-member team will travel to Monterrey, Mexico to compete against the world’s best youth swimmers from July 8-13.
The 17-year-old Chetrat, a member of the Oakville Aquatic Club, had an impressive showing recently at the CN Olympic Swimming Trials in Montreal, April 1-6. Chetrat had a breakthrough performance in the 200 butterfly qualifying for the A final (top 8) in the men’s 200 butterfly. His time of 2:02.79 ranks him sixth in the country and the top 17-year-old male. His performance also qualified him for his first Senior International Team for the Tri Nations Cup, which will be held in August in Quebec City.
Last summer Chetrat made a pool statement, winning four medals at the North American Cup Challenge in Los Angeles.
The FINA Youth Championships provides young swimmers an opportunity to compete in a friendly and inter-cultural environment, sharing their dreams with other young swimmers from around the world and getting to know future World and Olympic Medalists before they reach the top.
The Tri Nations cup will feature swimmers from Great Britain and France.
