Assistant women’s soccer coach moves into lead role at Mac


McMaster Marauders have swept up an Avalanche.

The Ontario University Athletics member has hired Richard Barnett as head coach of the women’s soccer team. Barnett has been the head coach of the Hamilton Lady Avalanche in the W League of the United Soccer League (USL) for the past two seasons and was the assistant coach of Mac’s women’s team last season.

He takes over from Tom McManus, who is departing after two years as head coach, to pursue a full-time position in Kamloops, B. C. McManus had also coached at McMaster from 1983-86 and again in 1990).

A National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) level 3 certified coach, Barnett has coached U14, U15 and U16 girls in the Hamilton Sparta program, and U17 and U18 girls in the Mount Hamilton Avalanche Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL).

The McMaster women’s soccer team will begin training camp in August. They open the 2008/2009 season at the new Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2:00 p.m. An estimated 3,000 first-year students are expected to attend the home opener as part of McMaster Welcome Week activities.
