T-Birds can’t dodge Oshawa’s onslaught in senior baseball

Hamilton Thunderbirds could be excused if they mistook Sunday, June 8 for July 1. The Oshawa Dodgers lit up Thunderbirds pitchers like a fireworks display, pounding out 17 hits that produced a 15-4 senior Intercounty Baseball League win at Bernie Arbour Stadium.

Sadly, the T-Birds had taken a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning only to have the Dodgers score a pair of runs in the third inning to knot the count.at 3-3. The visitors would score three more in each of the sixth and seventh innings, four more in the eighth and a final two in the ninth for a 12-run total in the final four innings. Hamilton picked up its final run in the sixth inning.

Nathaniel Smith had three hits and three runs-batted-in to pace the Oshawa attack that resulted in Hamilton’s 10th setback against three victories., With another three hits from Sean Cunningham, who also stole two bases, the Dodgers improved to 8-5. Brendan Emmett added two hits and two RBI for the Dodgers.

Brandy Agnew picked up the win in relief for the Dodgers, allowing one run on just two hits over 3 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking none.

Daryl Saucedo was the loser for Hamilton, allowing six runs – five earned – on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two. Tom Robertson had two hits for the Thunderbirds, while Richard Rausch had a double and two RBI.

Hamilton travels to Stratford to play the Nationals on Tuesday (June 10) night.
