Calling all golfers and supporters of high school athletics… and not necessarily in that order.
The fifth annual Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Award Presentation Dinner is set for Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Carlisle Golf and Country Club in Flamborough. The early bird deadline has been extended to June 18, which means register early and get a discount on playing in the golf tournament and the awards dinner after. Proficiency in golf is not a prerequisite.
The highlight of the event is the presentation of the Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. The award is made in the memory of John Wismer, a dedicated coach and teacher in Hamilton for more than three decades. The award reflects Wismer’s contributions to student athletes who he encouraged to do the best they could not only in sports but in their lives after school. The award is given annually to a coach in Hamilton’s public and Catholic school systems who makes significant contributions to the overall development of student athletes.
This year’s event will also introduce the foundation’s Kids Count, Sports Matter program. This annual bursary supports a sports related community initiative within the Hamilton Wentworth public and Catholic school boards. We will also be recognizing the 50th anniversary of the first team Wismer coached, the 1958 Central Golden Ghosts Junior football team.
Last year the foundation donated $16,000 towards community initiatives and this year has a goal of providing $19,000.
The early-bird entry deadline is Friday, June 20. Early registration of $150 each includes three mulligans, and a raffle prize. A putting contest will preceded the golf tournament and the driving range will be available – without charge – for those wishing to tuneup.
