Senior Thunderbirds let five-run lead slip away

The Kitchener Panthers pounded out 14 hits enroute to a 16-9 win over the visiting Hamilton Thunderbirds.

An eight-run, fourth inning lifted the Panthers to the senior Intercounty Baseball League win as they moved to within one game of the seventh place Thunderbirds in the IBL standings with the victory. Hamilton was holding onto a 9-4 lead when the Panthers clawed their way into the lead Sunday (June 29).

Russ Deutschman picked up the win with 5 1/3 shutout innings of relief, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts and one walk as Kitchener overcame a 9-4 deficit heading into the home half of the fourth inning.

Conrad Bach homered twice and drove in six runs to pace the Kitchener attack and had three hits. Jeff Pietraszko and Mike Winter also both homered for the Panthers, while Mike Andrulis, Mike Glinka, Brennan Hagey and Andy Pietraszko all had two hits.

Losing pitcher Scott Wells went 3 2/3 innings, allowing 11 runs on six hits with seven walks and six strikeouts. Scott Wells and Robert Foscaein both had two of Hamilton’s eight hits.
