Wismer’s coaching award has nine to choose from

Nine individuals have been nominated for this year’s Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence. And Sherwood Secondary School’s coaching staff had two nominees.

The award’s selection committee will pare that number, described by its members and the Wismer Foundation as “top notch teachers, and coaches who have made significant contributions to the Hamilton high school coaching scene and the community” to the final five.

They will be announced on Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. The final five will also be introduced at the Tiger Cat/B.C. Lions football game on Saturday, Sept.6 at 3:30 p.m. This year’s nominees for the 5th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence are:

St. Mary’s Sean Kiely, soccer, with 26 years coaching; Cardinal Newman’s Marc Kovacs, soccer, 32 years coaching; Bishop Tonnos’ Sean McPhee, football, nine years coaching; Parkside’s Brenda Nelson, basketball, volleyball, 31 years coaching; Ancaster’s Wilf Reed, football, hockey, waterpolo, volleyball, 30 years coaching; Sherwood’s Simone Rose, cheerleading, 10 years coaching; St. Thomas More’s Tom Spironello, football, 33 years coaching; Sherwood’s Chris Thomaidis, basketball, volleyball, golf, 10 years coaching; Saltfleet’s Jim Weatherbee, basketball, 27 years coaching.

The Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence is presented annually to a currently active, outstanding, high school coach in the city of Hamilton within either the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board or the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board. The award was established in memory of John Wismer who was a well respected, passionate educator/coach with the HWDSB for 33 years.

In a release, the Wismer family said, “We’re pleased with the community’s response to the Wismer Foundation initiatives and we are grateful for the support of our many sponsors and friends. We are blessed with an abundance of outstanding coaches in our community which makes it a difficult task for the selection committee to narrow the field to five finalists”

The 5th Annual Wismer Award for High School Coaching Excellence will be presented to one of the Final Five nominees at the Wismer Foundation Golf Tournament and Award Presentation Dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Carlisle Golf and County Club. A few openings remain for both the Golf Tournament and Award Dinner tickets.
