McGuire out to make his point in Olympic fencing

The 2008 Summer Olympics are set to begin in Beijing and a number of athletes representing Canada have roots in the Hamilton area.

McGuire has been fencing since the age of six, taking lessons early on at McMaster University. He competed in foil for Canada at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, where he finished in 29th position. He will bring a more experienced outlook to Beijing this summer.

In 2006, McGuire won the Canadian championships for foil in Montreal and took gold again at the Commonwealth Championships in Belfast. He added two more gold medals at the Pan American Zone Fencing Championships, held in Valencia, Venezuela, in singles foil and team foil. At the 2007 Pan American Fencing Championships, McGuire captured a silver medal in men’s foil and gold in Team foil.

McGuire has met the FIE criteria for singles foil and team foil events for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. He is currently ranked 27th in foil by the FIE.
