Thunderbirds looking for elite baseball players

Baseball tryouts for the Hamilton-based Canadian Thunderbirds are underway.

The Thunderbirds will hold tryouts for two age groups at Bernie Arbour Stadium over a number of days. The tryouts are for players in the 13-15 and 16-18 age groups.

Tryout dates and times for the 13-15 age group are:

Tonight (Friday, Aug. 8), 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Aug. 9, 9 a.m. to noon; Aug. 15, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Aug. 16, 9 a.m. to noon; Aug. 22, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Aug. 23 and 24, 9 a.m. to noon; Aug. 29, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Aug.30 and 31, 9 a.m. to noon.

The 16-16 age group will hold tryouts on: Aug. 9, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Aug. 13, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Aug. 16, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Aug. 20, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.;Aug. 23 and 24 1 p..m. to 4 p.m.; Aug. 27, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Aug 30 and 31, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A tentative date for Aug. 17, for both age groups, has been set for Aug. 17 at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Stadium.

Players should report at least 30 minutes prior to their start time and there will be a $10 fee for the tryouts. Refreshments (drinks) will be provided . Additional information is available at the Thunderbirds website:

In addition to the tryouts, the Thunderbirds will conduct an elite professional-based baseball instructional camp the week of Aug. 11 to 14. The five-day instructional camp will feature professionally run instructional clinics in hitting, fielding, pitching, and catching for two age groups.

The morning sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 12 noon for players 8 through 12 years-of-age. The afternoon sessions will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for players 13 through 18 years-of-age. The player limit is 30 per session.This player development camp is for Elite and Rep calibre players who are looking to play at the highest levels in the future. Former professional and current college players and coaches using a position-specific format will provide quality instruction.

All participants will receive a Camp T-shirt, a cap, a hot lunch, and beverages each day of the camp. Cost per player is $150.
