OUA, NCAA cagers test the courts in pre-season

With the Ontario University Athletics men’s basketball regular season still two months away, various schools will square off against National Collegiate Athletic Association foes in pre-season hoops action.

The CIS national champion Brock Badgers will be hosts Buffalo, Mercer and Missouri at Bob Davis Gymnasium in St. Catharines. It is the first time the Badgers will hit the hardwood since their incredible run at the CIS Final 8 last March, when they knocked out three higher-seeded teams to claim the CIS crown.

The most intriguing match-up has the defending NCAA Division I men’s champion Kansas Jayhawks visiting the Carleton Ravens, the No. 1-ranked club in the CIS for most of last season, and the defending OUA champions. While the Ravens failed to make it past the semi-finals in the CIS Final 8 Tournament, Carleton was undefeated in regular-season play in 2007-08. The program won five consecutive national titles from 2003 to 2007.

The Jayhawks won their first U.S. national title since 1988 last April, overcoming a nine-point second-half deficit to defeat the Memphis Tigers 75-68 in overtime at the NCAA Fina l Four in San Antonio, Texas. Kansas and Carleton tip off at 7 p.m. at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa in an OUA-NCAA doubleheader on Saturday (Aug. 30). The first game will showcase South Alabama and the Ottawa Gee-Gees at 5 p.m.

Other NCAA men’s basketball teams visiting OUA schools include Anderson, Charlotte, East Tennessee State, Iona College, Morgan State, North Carolina State, Northeastern, Penn State, South Alabama and Southern Illinois.
