Last year, the Mohawk women’s fastball team surprised many people by capturing the silver medal in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association championship. Mohawk took the defending champions and perennial powerhouse from Oshawa, the Durham Lords, to the brink, before bowing 2-0 in the gold medal matchup.
The Mountaineers head into the new season with optimism – about half of last year’s squad is back. The veterans are led by fourth-year ace Jenny Koschanow, who was named the top pitcher in the OCAA tournament. Three players – Samantha Tubman, Jill Larlee and Amanda Edmonds – are entering their third seasons. While no fewer than eight rookies have made the club, it appears some possess the talent to push returning players for starting positions.
And if anyone can get the best from his team it’s seventh-year coach and former OCAA Coach of the Year, Brian Weller.
The schedule-maker elected to start the season with a bang as last year’s finalists, Durham and Mohawk, will clash in a season-opening doubleheader on Thursday (Sept. 11) on Hamilton’s West Mountain. Game times will be 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Mohawk Sports Park.
