Hirsh gives true meaning to senior for Mohawk runners

Mohawk will be off and running this weekend… literally. The Cross Country team heads to St. Lawrence College in Kingston for the first invitational meet of the season. And Coach Wayne Collins feels both his men’s and women’s teams will be improved from 2007.

“Andre Simon, Justin Hensen and Jacob McDonald are running again this year, said Collins. “Newcomers David Hirsh and Jeff VanderHarst have impressed me in workouts and should strengthen our men’s team. I have four or five other new runners who are working hard and will probably make the team as well.”

Hirsh is an interesting addition. He turns 40 next month. Hirsh has been a very competitive local road racer for many years and has decided to return to school and the coach feels he’s very lucky to have someone of his experience and calibre on the roster.

Mohawk has had trouble fielding a full team of women in recent years, but Collins is confident that will change, as seven women have been trying out, this time around.

The women will definitely be led by the returning Charlene Gibbins, who improved throughout the 2007 season and won the bronze medal at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Championships in Kingston. Gibbins then finished as the top Ontario runner and a solid seventh overall in a field of 68 at the Canadian Colleges Championships in Grande Prairie Alberta.
