The Mohawk men’s soccer team picked up their first point of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association season Wednesday (Sep. 17). The Mountaineers played a 1-1 draw at Niagara.
After a scoreless first half, the home town Knights went ahead shortly after the resumption of play, on a penalty kick. But the Mountaineers equalized near the midway mark of the 2nd half. A free kick by Sirwan Irandost from well outside the 18 yard box hit the goalpost and Roberto Del Rosario was there to knock in the rebound.
Mohawk head coach Richard Bennett said his team played a much better game then they did losing their opener to Sheridan, but they still missed numerous wide open opportunities which would have given them three points. “The boys had many chances, several of them one-on-one with the Niagara goalkeeper, just to shoot wide, said Bennett. “The guys were trying too hard to score and ended up making mental mistakes.”
The Mountaineers have to get right back into action on Friday (Sep. 19) when they visit the Humber Hawks.
