Two McMaster Marauders and an Ottawa Gee-Gee are the Ontario University Athletics football players of the week for the period ending Sept. 22. McMaster quarterback Ryan Fantham (London) returned from an injury with a 13-point deficit, and under four minutes remaining to lead the Marauders to a 32-31 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in front of 7,292 fans at Guelph’s Alumni Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon.
Fantham’s efforts also earned him the male Pioneer Athlete of the Week award. Fantham threw for four touchdown passes including a clutch 52-yard bomb to Andrew Ross with 58 seconds left in the game.
Teammate Brad Fochesato (Lasalle, Ont.) tackled Guelph kicker Rob Maver for a turnover which set up a McMaster touchdown. Lee Shaver of Ottawa, a third-year defensive back with the Gee-Gees, had a team-high 5.5 tackles with an interception in Ottawa’s 59-0 home shutout the same day against the Waterloo Warriors. It was Ottawa’s first shutout victory since 2005 when the Gee-Gees defeated Toronto 72-0 on Oct. 8.
Queen’s Gaels goaltender Kate McKenna (Oakville) blanked the Carleton Ravens in women’s soccer.
