Fastball Mountaineers edged by Condors

The Mohawk Mountaineers dropped a 4-3 decision to the Conestoga Condors of Kitchener in Ontario Colleges Athletic
Association women’s fastball.

Playing at Mohawk Sports Park on Monday (Sep. 29), the visitors took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and fourth innings.

But Mohawk pulled even in the home half of the fourth. Samantha Tubman led things off with a double and Katelyn Galer singled, moving Tubman to third. Galer then stole second. Katie Brydges came through with a sacrifice fly scoring Tubman before Leanne DeBoer plated Galer with a single.

Conestoga regained the lead in the top of the 6th on a two-out, run-scoring double by Melissa Shewman. But the Mountaineers tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the frame. Tubman singled to lead off. Galer went in to run for her and stole second. She advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

However, in the top of the seventh, Jennifer Meyer doubled for Conestoga – advanced to third on a passed ball and scored what proved to be the winning run on a groundout.

Casey Ramey gave Mohawk some hope in the bottom of the seventh inning, singling with two out and stealing second base. But the Mountaineers could not cash her in.

Both pitchers went the distance. Suzane Hall of the Condors picked up the win while Jessica Roloson of Mohawk was charged with the loss.

Even in defeat, Mohawk coach Brian Weller felt Roloson pitched a good ball game and noted Nicole Todd pitched well against Conestoga in an outing earlier this season. And with ace Jenny Koschanow leading the way, Weller says he’s got three good pitchers for the OCAA tourney the middle of October.
