Volleyball Mountaineers show tenacity

For an exhibition match, it was awfully exciting and a large contingent of noisy Redeemer fans – drums and horns included – had lots to cheer about early as their men’s volleyball team grabbed a 2-0 lead in games at Mohawk’s Fennell Gym.

But the Mountaineers rallied big-time to pull out a five-set victory, Friday (Oct. 3), 21-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 15-12.

The Royals present a lot of height and talent and Mohawk head coach James Bradley feels Redeemer will be very good when the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season begins later this month.

“It’s tough (they have) a big wall to be hitting against,” said Bradley. “We have size over here as well, so it was a good tilt to be able to see a team bigger than us.”

The coach felt the match wouldn’t have been so close if his team wasn’t making 17 errors a set. But Bradley acknowledged his team showed considerable heart coming back from two down for the win.

“Absolutely, it’s nice to see they showed a little bit of resilience. With a team that young you don’t know which way that’s going to go.”
