Mountaineers gain revenge over Saints in fastball

Mohawk exploded for 15 hits and scored an impressive 10-4 win over St. Clair in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s fastball at Mohawk Sports Park on Tuesday (Oct. 7).

Just a week after being swept by the Saints in a doubleheader in Windsor, which included being no-hit by St. Clair’s Candice Gatecliffe, the Mountaineers got revenge against the Saints hurler. The visitors led 4-2 after two-and-a-half innings, but Mohawk scored four times in the third inning and added three more in the fourth and were on their way.

Amanda Edmonds had three hits, three RBI and a diving catch. Katie Brydges also had three RBI and was one of five Mountaineers with two hits on the night. Also driving in runs for the winners were Katelyn Galer, Ellie Hogg and Jenny Pletzer and another run was scored on a throwing error by St. Clair. Jenny Koschanow scattered four hits and struck out seven en route to the victory which improved Mohawk’s record to 4-6.

Head coach Brian Weller said the game was a big confidence boost for his squad. “This puts us in a position where we know there’s no doubt we can beat them and so we can go into the OCAA’s knowing they are a team we can handle.”

Weller said for a few games now, the players have been building harder and harder to be ready for the provincial championship. Edmonds agreed with her coach. “We’re coming together as a team, said the outfielder. “We’ve showed it from the beginning to now and we’re just getting better and better.” The outfielder said St. Clair is a great team. But Mohawk took advantage of their chances and then shut their opponents down.

The Mountaineers are back in action Thursday (Oct. 9) when they have two games against Seneca at Mohawk Sports Park. Game times will be 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
