Mountaineers left in Mustangs’ basketball dust

The reigning Ontario University Athletics West champions, the University of Western Ontario Mustangs, fashioned a huge run midway through the game to defeat the Mohawk Mountaineers 124-70 in exhibition men’s basketball in London on Wednesday (Oct. 8).

The Mustangs struggled with the Mountaineers press and trap early in the game and trailed 32-31 with just over eight minutes to go in the second quarter. They then went on a magnificent 31-point run which didn’t end until a third quarter bucket by Mohawk’s third-year centre Alen Beader.

That made the score 62-34 for Western.

Ironically, Hamilton natives came up big for the ‘Stangs in the game. Keenan Jeppesen (Stoney Creek) led all scorers with 27 points and Matt Curtis (Hamilton) had 12 assists. Ricky Heath led Mohawk with 12 points while Ryan Carrafiello added 11. Kyle Bissonnette had eight rebounds, while Tyler Kam had seven. However, Western out-rebounded the Mountaineers, 43-31.

Mohawk coach Brian Jonker used 15 players in the team’s first outing of the season. Western used just nine players, as they improved their pre-season record to 5-1 against NCAA, OCAA and Western Alumni opposition.
