Youth takes its toll on Mohawk volleyballers

The Mohawk men’s volleyball team got off to an unaccustomed start to its season Wednesday (Oct. 15), losing 25-19, 25-18, 25-23 to the Fanshawe Falcons in London.

The Mountaineers, who last year went undefeated in 12 regular season matches, captured the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association title and won a bronze medal at the national championship, are a much younger outfit this season. Star players Jasmin Cull, Peter Sniuolis, Adam Schiedel and Kevin Watson have all graduated.

Errors were the name of the game at Fanshawe, according to coach James Bradley. “We made a lot of them. Our youth and inexperience together really showed tonight. We are trying to find our chemistry as a team and figure many things out.

“We didn’t execute the game plan tonight. They really didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves,” concluded the Mohawk
bench boss.

Bradley said he had two standouts, however. Steve Pawelzcyk, the fourth-year product from Hamilton’s Barton Secondary School and who is playing right side this year, had 10 kills and one service ace. And middle Ian Cameron, in his third year out of Hamilton’s Westdale Secondary School, had seven kills and one stuff block.
