Mohawk taking uphill route to women’s OCAA fastball finale

The Mohawk Mountaineers will have an uphill climb to the gold medal in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Women’s Fastball after suffering a 6-2 loss to the league champion Durham Lords at the championship series in Windsor Friday night (Oct. 17).

The Lords jumped on Mohawk starter Jenny Koschanow with two outs in the first, scoring three times on a Shannon Ferguson bloop double. Ferguson later scored for the early cushion.

While Koschanow settled in after that with a strong performance, her counterpart, Lord’s Danielle Smith, was even stingier, allowing only two hits over the first four innings as Durham built a 5-0 lead.

The Mountaineers finally got on the board in the fifth on an RBI triple by Mohawk Player of the Game Casey Ramey. A sixth innng triple by Ellie Hogg and a wild pitch sandwiched a home run by Durham’s Player of the Year Erin Dewey to close out the scoring. Mohawk lost starting shortstop Katelyn Galer to a knee injury in the first inning which will sideline her for the rest of the tournament.

Mohawk, which won its opening game 9-6 over St. Clair, plays the host Saints again today at 10 a.m., after St. Clair eliminated Seneca 9-2.

The winner must beat Durham twice after that to steal the Gold Medal. The Lords are undefeated this season and the two time defending champion.
