Mountaineers run out of steam at volleyball tourney

The Mohawk Mountaineers were rolling along at the Fred Wannamaker Invitational Women’s Volleyball Tournament at Sheridan College in Oakville, until they were stopped by the Niagara Knights.

The Mountaineers reeled off four straight sets wins over George Brown, Loyalist, Sheridan and the U of T (Scarborough) in preliminary play on Friday and Saturday. But in the first playoff round, Niagara took them in three sets. It could have been another victory for Mohawk, but they failed to convert three match points. The scores were 22-25, 25-14, 16-17. (Volleyball games are normally decided by a minimum of two points but a cap of 17 points was placed on the last game between Mohawk and Niagara to explain the 16-17 score).
