Mohawk tunes up for OCAA x-country showcase

Mohawk Mountaineers had their final tuneup for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at an invitational meet in Windsor.

Charlene Gibbins of Mohawk finished 15th in the women’s five kilometre event on Saturday (Oct. 18). She was timed in 21:14.8. Wendy Richardson was 30th and Anita Tamminga 33rd, as Mohawk finished 5th in the team results.

Alyssa Thrasher led a 1-2-3 finish for University of Windsor runners and the winning time was 19:28.2. The Mohawk men finished fifth as a team. Andre Simon was 15th in 29:45.7, Justin Hensen was 28th, Jacob McDonald 40th, Alex Hamilton 52nd and Kyle Leis 54th.

Again University of Windsor runners showed the way, finishing first and second in the 8K event. Nathan Reiter was the winner in 27:23.8.

Mohawk coach Wayne Collins said colds and the flu affected his team but they should be ready to go for the OCAA Championships this coming weekend.

Mohawk and Redeemer will be co-hosts for the event. Race day is Saturday (Oct. 25). The runners will compete on the main trail at the Dundas Valley Conservation Area. The race will start behind the Morgan Firestone Arena, 385 Jerseyville Rd. West, in Ancaster. The women’s 5K race will begin at 11 a.m. while the men are set to take to the course at noon for their 8K run.
