Although they were eliminated from the playoffs, three members of the Hamilton Hurricanes are in the running for national junior football honours.
Receiver Steven Hughes is nominated for the Canadian Junior Football League’s Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year Award. The award is named after Canadian football hall of famer Peter Dalla Riva.
Hughes is up against Andrew Harris, running back with the Vancouver Island Raiders, and Khaleal Williams, quarterback with the Winnipeg Rifles.
Nominated as defensive player of the year is linebacker Aram Eisho. His competition for the Larry Wruck award is lineman David Bosch of the Chilliwack Huskers, and Carmen Fruncillo, a linebacker with the Calgary Colts.
Guiding the’Canes through their first season after a hiatus of 14 seasons is coach of the year nominee Jason Hayes. Along with Keith Kendal of the Calgary Colts and Howie Zaron of the Chilliwack Huskers they will vie for the Gord Currie award.
The awards will be presented Friday, Nov. 7 in Burlington.
