The Whitby Dunlops rolled into town last Friday (Oct. 31) and if you looked at the McCoy’s record against the visitors you might think Dundas’s unbeaten start to the Major League Hockey season was in jeopardy.
But such was not the case as the home town team rolled to an impressive 8-3 victory much to the delight of the fans who were treated, not tricked, to an excellent hockey game on Halloween.
Dundas now has a 4-0 record.
At the start it looked like Whitby might be the stronger of the two teams on the night as they jumped to an early lead only 52 seconds into the game. The score stayed that way as both teams pressed and at the 7:20 mark the McCoys tied things up when Mike Amodeo scored on a two-on-one after a nice set-up pass from Sam Campbell, one of the newcomers to the squad this year.
About six minutes later the visitors regained the lead but that advantage was short lived when Ryan Christie tied it with an unassisted goal 42 seconds later.
The score remained tied until Whitby went ahead 3-2 a few minutes later.
In the second period the home time put on an offensive display with two goals from the red hot Nick Smith, another tally by Amodeo and a power play goal from Justin Davis, to make the score 6-2 Dundas at the end of the second.
The Dunlops weren’t exactly backing off as they fired 24 shots at Brett Leggat in the McCoy’s net but he put in a stellar performance and shut the door on the Whitby team for the rest of the night.
In the third stanza the McCoys added two more power play goals Davis added his second of the night and Frankie Grandits finished off the scoring.
The McCoys entertain the Brantford Blast Friday (Nov. 6) at 7:45 p.m. at the J.L. Grightmire arena on Market street. They visit Whitby for a 6:30 p.m. game the next night.
