Mohawk women lose first volleyball outing

Mohawk teams got a split in their volleyball matches at St. Clair College in Windsor on Wednesday (Nov. 5). The men improved their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Region record to 2-1 with a 3-0 sweep of the Saints, who slipped to 2-3.

The scores were 26-24, 25-19, 25-22. Steve Pawelczyk (Barton) had 17 kills, two stuff blocks and two service aces while Mo Sulaiman (Barton) collected 11 kills, one block and three aces.

Mountaineers’ assistant coach Matt Schnarr said the team’s blocking and serving was very good, but there were still too many errors. So even though they played well enough to win, there’s much work to be done.

The Mohawk women had to deal with illness which struck the squad, and they dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Clair. Mohawk won the first set 25-22, but then dropped the next three, 23-25, 23-25, 21-25.

Mountaineers’ head coach Brian McEnhill had to move people around with starting libero Libby Johnston and star right side Leah Waxman both out of the lineup and they just couldn’t hold off the Saints.

Rachel VanHartingsveldt (Durham Christian) had 11 kills, one stuff block and one service ace. Allison Feliciano (Galt) recorded six aces, two blocks and six aces, while Candice Kragten (Cayuga) had six kills, five blocks and one ace.

The Mountaineers fell to 2-1 in the West, while the Saints improved to 3-2.
