Two pins stop Lewis from sixth 10-pin ace

Lionel Lewis Jr. almost notched a sixth perfect 300 game less than three weeks after recording his fifth ace.

His twelfth straight strike was foiled when the six and ten pins refused to fall and he was left with a 298 and 14th honour score in the Jonarc Classic League at Skyway Lanes. Along with the five 300s, Lewis has four games of 299 and three 800 triples. He is tied for fourth all-time with Bill Rowe Jr. in Hamilton behind Art Oliver Jr.’s 17 and Troy Demers and Aaron Bouchard who have 16 each.

After the 298, Lewis dealt games of 226, 237 for a 761 triple. A 237 fourth game left him two pins short of his second 1000 set of the season. Last week Lewis was six pins short with 994. The 298 is second high this season in the league behind Chris King and his 299 while Ed Maurer has a 290 and Walter Balog a 289.

A big day for Crystal Maurer of Caledonia in the same league as she recorded her first ever 700 triple, and also beat her father Ed Maurer.

Crystal, who carries a 197 average, pitched games of 233, 239 and 239 for a 711 triple, then added a 197 for a 908 set. Ed – 224 average – saw a 266 high game leave him five pins short of Crystal with a 903 set. On hand to see daughter beat father was wife Kathy. Three months ago Crystal mixed a 299 in a summer league in Mississauga.

Other 700 triples were grooved by Mike Howard, 735 (258), Art Oliver Jr., 735, and Steve Smith, 701. Top four game sets are Howard, 970, Oliver, 939, Del Belanger, 919 (257), Bill Lishinski, 895, and Mike Ellis, 881 with a 258 high. Super singles came from Ray Beitz, 269, and Ray Sakalas, 265.

Last week’s top singles were Howard and Lewis at 268, and Oliver, 267. Lewis holds high average at 228 with King at 227. Doug Schatz, 225, Ed Maurer, 224, Kyle Kloosterman and Aaron Bouchard, 222 and Lishinski, 221. That’s seven of Hamilton’s finest bowlers averaging over 220.

At Classic Bowl in the first round of Canadian Tenpin Federation qualifying play, Chelsea King used a 222 to finish first and advance for the junior girls. Also advancing were Christine Johnston with 210 game for fifth and Jennifer Lewis, who had a 208 game for second.

For the intermediate girls, Nicole Hand, second, and Megan Gagnon, fourth, qualified along with Tegan Male for her seventh place in senior girls. These six next compete at Prime Time Bowling in January.

For the past few days, George Lambert IV is using the Pro Bowlers Tour off week for visiting family and practising at Prime Time, under the watchful eye of Bill Rowe Jr. Next up are stops in Chicago and Buffalo.
