Bruins tamed, Mountaineers look ahead to Knights

The Mohawk Mountaineers rolled to another win in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s volleyball, defeating Oakville’s Sheridan Bruins in straight sets at the Fennell Gymnasium on Wednesday (Dec. 3). The scores were 25-17, 25-18, 25-17.

Steve Pawelczyk (Barton) led the Mountaineers with 10 kills, one stuff block and four service aces. Kevin deJonge (Guido de Bres) contributed six kills, three blocks and two aces while Codey Forrest (Port Dover) had eight kills, one block and two aces.

Mohawk is now 7-1 and stands second in the West division behind London’s Fanshawe at 8-1. Sheridan falls to 2-7.

Pawelczyk, who has put up some very big offensive numbers this year, noted Mohawk has good power. “Our focus is service pressure and passing and (we’ve) really been working on that all season, so it really shows the service pressure is working for our team.”

As for his own game Pawelczyk admitted he’s surprised how well things are going to him. “Oh, absolutely,” said Pawelczyk. “After moving from the middle to the right (side) I definitely didn’t think I’d be able to produce this, but everything is going great and I just hope I can keep it going.”

Mohawk coach James Bradley says Friday’s match at Niagara College to end the first semester will be difficult, even with the Knights’ 3-5 record.

“It’s a tough gym to play in, a tough atmosphere,” said Bradley. “We’ve always had a good rivalry with (the Knights) and I don’t think that it’ll be too hard to get them motivated to play it. I expect it’ll be a barn burner and we’ll go in there prepared for that.”
