Mohawk women share fourth place in OCAA volleyball

The Mohawk women’s volleyball team made quick work of the Sheridan Bruins in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play at the Fennell Gym on Wednesday (Dec. 3).

The Mountaineers swept their Oakville opponents 25-18, 25-18, 25-17.

Leah Waxman (Port Dover) led the home side with 10 kills and one serving ace. Candice Kragten (Cayuga SS) had eight kills and two stuff blocks, Rachel VanHartingsveldt (Durham Christian) collected nine kills, Stacey Dafoe (Paris District) scored seven kills and two blocks and Allison Feliciano (Galt CI) also had seven kills and two blocks.

Mohawk assistant coach Michelle Foxcroft felt the team was a bit sloppy at times against an opponent which has been struggling and the players are probably tired, not to mention a bit stressed with exams coming up.

But she agreed it was nice to bounce back after a 1-2 record the previous week.

“They had a really, really tough game Sunday against (Nipissing),” said Foxcroft. “I was hoping they’d bring a lot of that intensity tonight. They brought a little bit of it at some points and at other times we kind of sat back, but a 1-2 weekend and we come away with another win and hopefully another one on Friday (at Niagara).”

Mohawk is now 7-3 and tied for fourth place in the West division with London’s Fanshawe. Sheridan is 3-8.
